The Miss Summit County Scholarship Program
The Miss Portage Lakes Scholarship Program was started in 1997, with the crowning of Paige Hellyer. The program was held at The Coventry High School Theatre.

After a brief hiatus, Jennica McCleary was crowned Miss Portage Lakes in February of 2001, at the Freedom Road Community Centre.

After much debate and careful consideration, the Miss Portage Lakes title evolved into Miss Summit County. Our first Miss Summit County, Amanda Beagle, was crowned on November 10, 2001, at the beautiful Coventry High School Theatre.

The Story of the Miss America Organization
The story of the Miss America Organization is an essential chapter in the history of women in the twentieth century. Its national scope and longevity alone has had an effect on our nation's conception of womanhood, providing an important register of significant social and cultural trends in American society. Since its beginnings in 1921, it has reflected ideas about national identity, community, and moral standards, as well as beauty, femininity, and the roles of women.

Each Miss America has echoed the debates and discussions of the times about women and their status in American society, whether it was the first Miss America, 16-year-old Margaret Gorman, noted for her athleticism, beauty, and innocence, or opera singer Yolande Betbeze, Miss America 1951, who refused to wear a bathing suit in public as part of her duties after crowning, or Miss America 1974, Rebecca King, the first Miss America to become a lawyer. And in the transformations of Miss America over time, from flapper to glamour girl to scholarship winner to socially-conscious spokesperson, we can trace changes in America's collective attitudes and values, as well as those in our own lives.

In the Organization's 81-year history, 74 women have worn the Miss America crown. Several factors have contributed to this disparity, including the naming of the only back-to-back winner (Mary Campbell in 1922-23), lapses due to major historic world events, and the introduction of the post-dating concept in September, 1950, with the crowning of Miss America 1951 Yolande Betbeze.

Today, Miss America logs 20,000 miles a month, changing her location every 18 - 36 hours and reaching out to support charitable and community endeavors that characterize her present-day image.
